Proton has introduced Easy Switch, a migration tool designed to help users transition from Gmail to Proton Mail with minimal hassle.
The tool enables users to import Gmail data into Proton Mail, forward incoming Gmail messages to the Proton Inbox, and send emails from Gmail addresses directly within the Proton Mail interface.
The goal is to support gradual switches rather than requiring users to change email providers all at once. Easy Switch is now available for Proton Mail users.
How Proton’s Easy Switch tool works for Gmail users
When Easy Switch is activated, Proton imports the user’s most recent Gmail messages into Proton Mail, ensuring that recent conversations and threads are accessible from within the Proton interface. New emails sent to the user’s Gmail address automatically arrive in the Proton Mail inbox after setup.
Users can also send emails from their Gmail address when composing messages inside Proton Mail. When emails are sent to other Proton Mail users, they are end-to-end encrypted by default.
The combination of features allows users to:

- Access recent Gmail conversation history inside Proton Mail
- Receive new Gmail messages in their Proton Mail inbox
- Send a reply from their Gmail address using Proton’s interface

Why Proton is promoting Easy Switch as a privacy-friendly alternative to Gmail
Proton presents its tool as a way to reduce friction for users concerned about Gmail’s privacy practices. Ananth Vijay Singh, head of product for Proton Mail and Drive, explained that Google scans Gmail activity to create advertising profiles, which follow users across the web and link that activity to their identity.
Proton emphasizes that it does not scan user emails, show ads, use email data to train AI models, or create profiles based on user correspondence.
The company sees this change as an opportunity for users to gradually move services like Netflix and Amazon to their Proton email address, which will reduce activity associated with a single Google account.
To begin migrating, users typically follow a straightforward process with Proton. First, sign up for or log in to a Proton Mail account. Then, open the Easy Switch tool from within Proton Mail.
Connect your Gmail account using Google’s standard authentication method. Next, set the import scope, which includes recent messages and ongoing email forwarding. You can also choose to enable sending emails from your Gmail address directly within Proton Mail.

What Proton Mail users should consider before switching from Gmail
Easy Switch simplifies the process of changing email providers by reducing the immediate effort required. However, users will still need to update their primary email address with banks, online accounts, subscription services, and contacts to completely move away from Gmail.
The gradual approach allows users to continue using their Gmail addresses for legacy services while converting new accounts to Proton addresses over time.
This tool is available to both free and paid Proton Mail users, although some features may be restricted depending on the plan level. Proton has not specified whether import volumes or sending rates differ between free and paid accounts.
