Microsoft has announced that it will switch to a two-week release cycle for Microsoft Edge starting with Edge 152, which is set to reach the Stable channel on August 27. Each update will include about half as many new features as the previous release, but twice as many.
Microsoft says this change will allow users to receive new features and security updates more quickly. The extended stable channel, introduced in 2021 for organizations wanting a more predictable schedule, will continue to follow its existing eight-week update cycle.
What changes to Edge’s release cycle and what happens to extended stability
Microsoft Edge currently releases new versions approximately every four weeks. Under the update schedule, stable updates will be released every two weeks.
This change means that users will soon see new features and platform improvements. Since each update is small, it can also simplify verification for IT teams.
Security updates will continue to be released on both stable and extended stable channels. Important security patches are applied to both, with the main difference being how quickly new features arrive in each channel.
Extended Stable will now only receive updates every fourth release, such as Edge 156, 160, and 164. The eight-week interval between Extended Stable updates remains unchanged. Organizations using Extended Stable do not need to take any action.
What should users and organizations do before the arrival of Edge 152
For users on Stable, Microsoft recommends planning for smaller, more frequent updates and rapid deployment of security fixes. Organizations using Extended Stable do not need to take any action; The existing eight-week cycle and support model will continue as is.
Microsoft suggests all users to add a pilot group to the beta channel and start testing on the first day of each release to make the most of the verification time. Enterprise Preview remains the supported path for testing beta builds, with setup instructions available for IT administrators.
