Bungie’s lead communications manager for Destiny, Dylan “DMG04” Gaffner, has publicly expressed his gratitude to the Destiny 2 community as the game nears its final content update.
The studio recently announced that Destiny 2 will receive its final update in June 2026, marking the end of active development after nine years. The last update has been named Vijay Smarak.
Gaffner posted on X that he appreciated the tributes shared by fans and was passing them along to the development team. “Thank you to everyone who reached out.
Thank you to everyone who is sharing what Destiny means to them,” he wrote, adding that he was forwarding them “photos, videos, artwork, everything” when he joined the team.
What happens to Destiny 2 after the last Monument of Triumph update
Bungie has announced that active development on Destiny 2 will end after the June update. The game will still be playable, but it will no longer receive new content updates.
The final update, called Monument of Triumph, marks the end of a franchise that began nearly 12 years ago with the original Destiny in 2014.
The end of active development has sparked much discussion within the community about a potential Destiny 3. A petition demanding a sequel has received hundreds of thousands of signatures, with several voice actors from the series supporting the campaign.
This effort seems to be partly aimed at putting pressure on Bungie’s owner, Sony, to approve a new installment.
At present there is no possibility of a sequel. Reports suggest that Destiny 3 is not in active development and Bungie has no projects approved beyond Marathon, the extraction shooter the studio previously released in 2026.
Significant layoffs are reportedly expected at Bungie after Destiny 2’s final update, as the studio turns its focus to Marathon.
Why does Destiny 3 seem unlikely at the moment?
Destiny 2 is shutting down when connected to PlayStation Plus.
Sony announced that Destiny 2: Legacy Collection, which includes The Final Shape expansion and is set for release in 2025, will be available to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members starting June 9. This is the same day when the final update for the game is expected.
Bungie has not revealed any plans for a new Destiny game. The studio’s current focus is on Marathon, which has experienced a challenging launch period.
It is unclear whether the Destiny franchise will continue in any form beyond the current playable but stable state of Destiny 2, as neither Bungie nor Sony have made any further statements.
