According to Windows Central, Microsoft is preparing to release Windows 11 version 26H2, 2026 Feature Update as an enablement package based on the same platform as version 25H2.
The update will not introduce new features at launch and is expected to install with a single restart on devices already running version 25H2 or 24H2. Windows 11 version 23H2 and older versions, including Windows 10, will require a full feature update instead.
Microsoft has not announced an exact release date for version 26H2, and estimates are that the rollout will follow the same gradual process used for version 25H2.
Windows 11 26H2 vs 25H2: Same features, different upgrade paths
According to Windows Central, versions 25H2 and 26H2 are built on the same platform and share similar features. Version 26H2 uses build numbers in the 26300 series, while version 25H2 uses the 26200 series.
Despite different build numbers, cumulative updates for both versions usually share the same KB number because they are based on the same core code.
Hopefully Microsoft will continue to provide support for both versions with the same features and improvements. The main purpose of version 26H2 at launch is to update the version number and extend the support lifecycle rather than introducing new features.
The update process depends on the current Windows version. Devices running version 25H2 or 24H2 will receive version 26H2 as an enabled package via Windows Update.
An enablement package is a small update that activates features already present but dormant in the operating system. This process requires only a restart.
Devices running version 23H2 or lower will require a full feature update to upgrade to version 26H2. The same applies to Windows 10 devices as well. Systems compatible with Windows 10 will receive version 26H2 directly through Windows Update without the need to install a previous feature update first.
According to Windows Central, using the official ISO or other Microsoft installation media to upgrade will result in a full in-place upgrade, even on devices running version 25H2 or 24H2. This process preserves files, apps, and settings but reinstalls the operating system and takes longer than using the enabled packages.
26H2 Hardware Requirements and Phased Rollout
Version 26H2 does not bring any new hardware requirements. Minimum specs remain a 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot, DirectX 12 compatible GPU with TPM 2.0, WDDM 2.0 drivers, and a 720p display larger than 9 inches. Devices currently running version 25H2 will be able to upgrade to version 26H2 without any hardware changes.
According to Windows Central, Microsoft is likely to use its controlled feature rollout system to gradually increase availability over several weeks or months.
The update is expected to first appear as an optional install in Windows Update settings, then automatically become available to supported devices as version 25H2 nears the end of support.
If an update doesn’t appear immediately on a device, it’s usually due to staging in the rollout process rather than a compatibility issue.
Raising Support with 26H2 and How to Get Ready
Since version 26H2 does not include new features, the main reason for installing it is to extend the support period of the device. Support for version 25H2 will continue until October 2027, and version 26H2 is expected to add approximately one year, following Microsoft’s typical support windows of 24 months for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education.
Version 24H2 will reach end of support on October 13, 2026, so devices still running that version should update to a supported release to receive security updates.
For users of version 25H2 or 24H2 who want the fastest upgrade path, it is best to wait for the enabled package to become available through Windows Update rather than using the ISO file. Users of version 23H2 or Windows 10 should check compatibility before upgrading, as this will be a full feature update.
To prepare for the update, start by opening Settings, then go to System and select About to verify your current version and build number. When the update starts rolling out in your region, open Settings, select Windows Update, and check for updates.
It is advisable to backup important files before starting any feature updates, especially if upgrading from version 23H2 or Windows 10. Avoid using the Media Creation Tool or ISO files on devices running versions 25H2 or 24H2 unless you plan on a full reinstall, as these methods bypass enabled packages.
Microsoft has not announced an exact release date for version 26H2 or the update order for different hardware setups. Users of version 24H2 should plan to upgrade to a supported version before the October 13, 2026, support end date to avoid gaps in security updates.
