GTA 6 Forces Studios Worldwide to Plan Release Schedules Around Rockstar's November Launch | Free Download

According to Asobo Studio producer Eric Chort, the games industry’s studios have scheduled their release dates around the November launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.

This has resulted in a very busy autumn release calendar, with most major publishers fitting their launches into the six-week period leading up to GTA 6.

Chort shared these details with Eurogamer while discussing launch plans for the upcoming prequel, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, releasing on August 27.

Studios adopt GTA 6’s “The Ogre”

All the studios around the world were thinking about it. When you know GTA is coming, you realize that in terms of marketing, player engagement, and overall gaming experience, GTA is like the main event, the biggest one. Therefore, teams try to adapt and find ways to avoid being overwhelmed.

Asobo decided to release Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy in late August. This period would normally be considered a relatively quiet and safe window for launches, but Chort acknowledged that the 2026 calendar is already quite crowded ahead of GTA 6’s release.

He added, “This year, we saw that there are a lot of good games, or at least a lot of quality titles, so we believe the industry is like that. Our goal is to make the best games possible.”

Crowded Pre-GTA 6 Release Calendar

Most major fall titles have been moved to the beginning of the year to avoid direct competition due to the release of GTA 6 in November. Confirmed releases in the weeks leading up to GTA 6 include

  • Marvel’s Wolverine,
  • Gears of War: E-Day,
  • Fire Symbol: The Weaving of Fate,
  • Control Resonant (24 September),
  • silent hill townfall,
  • The Blood of Dawnwalker (September 3),
  • Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy (27 August), and
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (October 23), early access available starting October 16.

Publishers have effectively turned September and October into the most active periods for new game releases this year.

Why does GTA 6 distort the entire release schedule?

Take-Two Interactive estimates its revenue will exceed $8 billion in fiscal year 2027, with most of the growth expected to come from GTA 6. Industry estimates indicate that the game could sell 45 million copies on PS5 in its first week.

Rockstar’s GTA 5 remains a strong seller, moving millions of copies annually more than a decade after its initial release, driving consistent revenue.

The anticipated commercial impact of GTA 6, coupled with the concentration of player time and attention on a single release, makes it advantageous for publishers to avoid launching competing titles in the same window.

Releasing a game too close to GTA 6 risks reducing coverage and player engagement regardless of quality.

GTA 6 is scheduled for console launch on November 19, 2026. A PC version has not been confirmed yet.
