According to the Waze blog, Google is rolling out a new Waze update on Android that introduces a less chatty voice guidance mode, expands Gemini-powered conversational reporting to include map update suggestions, and adds conversational search for destinations along the route. Most of the features are now available for Android devices.
Conversational search requests are initially available to Waze beta users on Android. The update is designed to reduce interruptions while driving and enhance the app’s conversation capabilities.
Less conversation mode and conversational maps update in Waze
The new less chatty mode in Waze reduces the number of times you have to deliver voice updates. According to Waze, this feature allows drivers to enjoy music and podcasts with fewer interruptions while keeping them aware of key navigation information.
When Less Chatty is enabled, Waze continues to provide essential updates such as directions, turn directions, lane change guidance and hazard warnings. These updates occur less frequently and are sent only when necessary. The option can be found in the Voice Guidance menu, just below General settings.
For drivers who currently mute Waze or lower its volume to avoid interruptions, Les Chatie offers a middle ground that maintains access to important information without the constant narration typical of standard voice mode.
Waze is also expanding its Gemini-powered conversational reporting feature. Originally launched for reporting traffic incidents, this capability now also includes map update suggestions.
Users can report changes such as road closures using natural speech. Google explains: “Simply say, ‘There’s a road closure here’ and Waze will send these details to local map editors, who verify the suggestion and update the map.”
This update makes it easier for users to contribute map improvements while driving. Instead of navigating menus or manually typing in details, users can submit updates using just their voice.
Interactive search for destinations and how to use it
Waze is introducing a new interactive search feature that allows users to ask about points of interest along their route. Examples of questions include “Find a coffee shop near my destination” or “Is there a parking lot near where I’m going?”
The system is activated by tapping the voice search icon and speaking naturally. It is powered by Gemini and understands natural language instead of relying on exact keyword matches.
Currently, conversational search is being rolled out to beta users on Android. Google has not provided any timeline for when this feature will be available to all Waze users.
For Android users:
- Update Waze to the latest version via Google Play Store
- Enable less chatting mode in Settings under Voice Guidance
- Use conversational reporting by speaking naturally to report events or map changes during navigation

For iPhone users, Google has not announced when this feature will be available on iOS. Waze typically releases new features on Android first, with support for iOS arriving after a delay.
