Valve has confirmed it is ending the Steam gift card program at retail stores, citing years of scam abuse. Physical Steam Gift Cards will be available at retailers while stocks last. Once those locations sell through their inventory, Valve will not restock them. The company expects all retailers to run out of physical cards by the end of 2026.
Existing cards will remain valid. Users can redeem any unused physical Steam Gift Cards on Steam at any time, with no expiration date.
Why is Valve eliminating physical Steam gift cards in retail stores?
Valve introduced Steam gift cards to retail stores in 2012. Since then, the cards have been used by fraudsters in coercion schemes, in which victims are pressured into purchasing gift cards under the guise of paying taxes, collateral, loans, or delivery fees for fake sweepstakes winnings. This pattern affects gift cards from major brands across the industry.
Valve has taken several measures to fight scams over the past few years, including:
- Working with retailers and law enforcement
- Adding a major scam warning to the cards
- Limiting redemptions to Steam wallet currency
- Limiting card availability
- Removing cards from sale if unusual activity is detected
The company says scammers have adapted to each restriction. Valve’s final response is to shut down the physical card program entirely.
What does this mean for existing physical Steam gift cards
Users who already have a physical Steam Gift Card can redeem it on Steam whenever they want. There is no time limit for redemption.
The closure only affects sales of new physical cards, not the validity of cards already in circulation or being sold through existing retail stock.
To redeem a physical card, sign in to your Steam account, open the Account Details menu, select Activate a product on Steam and enter the code from the card.
Digital Steam gift cards will remain available, and what it means for users
Digital Steam gift cards introduced in 2017 will not be affected by the closure. Valve says digital cards will remain available and the company is working to improve the digital gift card experience. Digital gift cards are sold directly through Steam and sent to the recipient via email or a Steam friend.
The expiration of the physical cards may cause inconvenience to users who relied on them as gifts for family members or friends who do not actively use Steam or who prefer not to receive digital codes.
Digital Steam Gift Cards require both the sender and recipient to have a Steam account and are best suited for recipients who already use the platform.
For users who wish to continue using the physical card, retail stock is expected to last through the end of 2026, with availability declining throughout the year as remaining stock sells out.
